How to Convert a Photo to Line Art (Clean, Printable Lines)
Photo to line art means reducing a photograph to clean black outlines with no shading or fill. You can do it in a few taps with an AI converter such as Stencil AI, trace it by hand in a drawing app, or vector-trace a high-contrast version. Good lighting and a plain background matter more than the tool.
What is the difference between line art and a stencil?
Line art is a drawing made of lines only. There is no shading, no tone and no filled area beyond the occasional solid black shape. Lines can be open, they can vary in thickness, and they can float free of each other, because nothing has to be transferred or cut. A stencil starts as line art and then follows extra rules. A tattoo stencil needs continuous, closed outlines that an artist can follow with a needle, and it is mirrored before transfer. A cutting stencil for paint or vinyl needs bridges so that enclosed shapes, the islands, stay attached to the sheet. That is why an outline that looks perfect as an illustration can be useless on a cutting mat. If you want the cutting rules, bridges and islands in stencil design covers them; this post stays with line art itself, which is the raw material for both.
What does a good source photo look like?
A good photo for line art has one clear subject, light coming from one side, a plain background and sharp focus. Side light matters most: it puts a visible edge between the lit and shadow sides of a face, a hand or a flower, and that edge is the line you want. Flat, frontal light from a phone flash erases those edges, while backlighting turns the subject into a silhouette with nothing inside it. The background should be plain or well out of focus, because every crisp object behind the subject becomes lines you have to erase later. Fill the frame: a subject that occupies a quarter of the photo gives you a quarter of the detail. Skip screenshots and heavily compressed images, since compression blocks turn into jagged edges. If your photo breaks these rules, crop tightly before converting and expect more eraser time. The same rules apply whether you are converting for line art or turning a photo into a stencil.
Which photo to line art method should you use?
There are three real approaches: an AI converter, tracing by hand, and vector tracing. An AI converter such as Stencil AI redraws the photo as continuous outlines, drops the shading and closes the shapes, which makes it the fastest route and the only one that copes well with soft, low-contrast photos without manual work. Hand tracing in a drawing app means placing the photo on a bottom layer at reduced opacity and drawing the lines yourself on a layer above; it is slow, and it gives you every decision. Vector tracing, such as Image Trace in Illustrator or Trace Bitmap in Inkscape, converts a high-contrast bitmap into editable paths, which is ideal for logos and flat graphics and poor on photos unless you threshold them first. Most illustrators combine them: convert with AI, then clean up or redraw the parts that matter by hand.
| Method | Speed | Handles soft photos | Editable afterwards | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI converter | Fast, a few taps | Yes, outlines are redrawn | Raster edit in the app or any paint program | Portraits, pets, references, colouring pages |
| Hand tracing | Slow, 30 minutes and up | Yes, if you can draw | Fully, it is your drawing | Illustration, stylised work, simplifying busy photos |
| Vector tracing | Fast on clean input | No, needs a threshold pass first | Yes, as vector paths | Logos, flat graphics, laser cutting, cutting machines |
How do you control line weight and smoothing?
Line weight is the thickness of the lines, and it should match the output rather than the screen. In Stencil AI the Adjust tool has three sliders. Line Weight thickens or thins every line at once, Darkness pushes greys toward solid black so nothing prints as a faint smudge, and Smoothing removes the small jitters that fine texture leaves behind. For an illustration you will ink over, keep lines thin and smoothing low so detail survives. For a colouring page, go one step heavier so a child's crayon has a clear boundary to stay inside. For engraving or embroidery, go heavier still and raise smoothing until the wobbles are gone, because a laser or a needle will faithfully reproduce every bump you leave in. A line that reads well on a phone screen can vanish when printed at 5 cm wide, which is the same problem tattooers face and why line weight for tattoo stencils is worth reading even if you never tattoo.
When to fix by hand instead of with a slider
Sliders change everything at once. If one area needs a heavier line, the eye of a portrait for instance, use the Touch Up brush to draw over that line alone. Pinch to zoom in, draw with one finger, and use Erase for the reverse. Undo covers mistakes.
How do you export transparent PNG line art?
Transparent line art is a PNG in which the lines are black and everything else is fully clear, so you can drop it over a colour fill, a texture or a second image without a white box around it. In Stencil AI, open the Ink tool in the editor and set Paper to Transparent instead of White, then save the stencil to your camera roll. The Ink tool also lets you change the line colour to Blue, Red, Violet, White or a custom colour before export, which is useful when you want a blue underdrawing to ink over in a drawing app, or white lines to sit on a dark background. Keep a White-paper copy too, because a transparent PNG is hard to preview and prints unpredictably from some apps. For anything that goes to a printer, print the white version; for anything that goes into another app as a layer, use the transparent one. Every editor tool is documented in the Stencil AI app guide.
What can you use photo line art for?
Clean line art from a photo is a starting point for far more than stencils. The four uses below are the ones I see most, and each wants a slightly different line. Colouring pages want medium lines and closed regions. Illustration wants thin lines and a transparent export. Laser engraving wants heavy, smooth lines and no tiny gaps. Embroidery digitising wants the fewest lines that still describe the subject. In every case, start from a good photo, convert, then adjust the weight and smoothing for the job rather than accepting the default. If your real goal is a tattoo, pumpkin or spray-paint stencil, the photo to stencil page is the better starting point; for pure line art, the photo to line art page shows the app's output on a range of subjects.
Colouring pages
Convert a photo of a pet, a house or a family member, raise Line Weight one or two steps, and make sure every region is closed so colour has somewhere to stop. Print on plain paper at fit-to-page. Photos with a few large shapes make better pages than busy scenes.
Illustration and inking
Export a transparent PNG with thin lines, or blue lines if you plan to ink over them. Place it on a layer in your drawing app, lower the opacity, and draw your final lines on top. The conversion gives you proportions and placement; the style is still yours.
Laser engraving
Engraving software can burn a black-and-white PNG directly in raster mode, or trace it to vectors for a scored outline. Use heavy lines, high smoothing and a white background, and remove any line thinner than the laser's spot size. The same preparation applies to wood burning stencils, which is engraving by hand.
Embroidery digitising
Digitising software turns lines into running-stitch or satin paths. Fewer, longer, closed lines stitch cleanly; hundreds of short strokes produce a mess of jump stitches. Simplify the conversion with Smoothing, erase texture in Touch Up, and keep only the lines that define the shape before importing.
Frequently asked questions
Is line art the same thing as a stencil?
Not quite. Line art is any drawing made only of lines, with no shading or fill. A stencil is line art with extra rules: closed shapes for tattoo transfer, and bridges so nothing falls out if you cut it. Every stencil is line art, but not every piece of line art works as a stencil.
Can I get line art with a transparent background?
Yes. In Stencil AI, open the Ink tool and set Paper to Transparent, then save. You get a PNG with black lines and a clear background that you can drop over any colour or texture in another app.
What photo works best for line art?
One subject, light from one side, a plain background and sharp focus. The subject should fill most of the frame. Fine fur, glasses reflections and backlighting all produce messy lines and need extra cleanup.
Can I use photo line art for laser engraving or embroidery?
Yes, with preparation. Laser software can engrave a black-and-white PNG directly or trace it to vectors for scoring. Embroidery digitising software traces the lines into running-stitch paths, so keep the line count low and the lines closed.
